Thanks to the space race that spanned from the 50s to the 70s, it inspired a tsunami of sci-fi movies in the 60s-70s including classics like Barberella and Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. These movies, together with the then on-going space race, in turned inspired the designs of many things ranging from appliances to furniture to even automobile which resulted in products that oozes with space age details in them. When we say ‘space age’ details, it was the soft curves and minimalist outlook that we are talking about. It was an era that some of us reminiscences but not necessary thought has a place today, or so we thought. And then we stumbled upon the RE:MAKE WE:MAKE Teleavia P111 TV by Hogeun Jang of South Korea design studio, PDF Haus.
Teleavia Retro TV is, as the name suggests, a reimagination of the retro-futuristic Teleavia P111 TV from the 60s. It bears all the key elements of the originals, like the soft, subtle curves, rounded corners frowned upon by today’s appliances and whatnot, but yet, it is every bit a modern day TV. Gone are the chunky knobs and dials, and in their place are soft, iconized keys that discreetly at the bottom of the display. The display here is, obviously, not CRT; it is of flatscreen and therefore, it offers another distinct differences from the set that inspired it. The screen is now flat, but maintaining the wideness and the subtle curves around it. It is also very much thinner, though not ridiculously thin like today’s flatscreen displays.
Other features include a leather carry handle, a series of inputs including a HDMI, USB ports, component inputs, RGB, WPS audio in/out and what looks like an integrated soundbar below the curved border display. Finally, a handy remote that appears to be fashioned after the TV’s form rounds up the package. RE:MAKE WE:MAKE Teleavia Retro TV is not mind-blowing, but for some reasons, it puts a smile on my face. For unknown reasons, it is extremely alluring and hence, likeable. Perhaps, it is this unexplained reason that constitutes to an awesome design.
