Ricoh GR fans, calm down. Take a breath. Yes, it’s happening. After what felt like a whole photographic era since the GR III, Ricoh has finally announced the GR IV. But before you start camping outside the camera store, it’s still in development. So, patience, grasshopper.

The upcoming Ricoh GR IV continues the cult-favorite lineage of high-end compact cameras that street photographers clutch like holy relics. But this isn’t just a GR III with new shoes. It’s getting a new 18.3mm F2.8 lens, a new 25.7 MP APS-C sensor, and a new image engine—translation: sharper shots, faster response, better color, and probably fewer arguments with Lightroom.
This pocket beast is rocking sensor-shift 5-axis image stabilization, ISO up to 204,800 (because why not), and hybrid autofocus with face/eye detection. It also gets a 3” touchscreen, 53GB internal storage, and supports microSD cards. It shoots RAW, JPEG, and Full HD video. And if you like pretending you’re a sniper when framing a shot, yes, there’s a full range of manual exposure controls and focus modes to nerd out on.
Also on deck: a new companion app called GR WORLD, plus an HDF version with highlight diffusion filter magic coming later. The GR III will be discontinued this July due to parts issues, but the GR IIIx lives on—for now.
Expected to launch this autumn 2025, the GR IV was on display in Tokyo, Beijing, and Shanghai starting May 31—so you can drool in person. Though we are not sure if it is still available to view at the time of this post.
