Forget about personal water propulsion systems like the Scubjet if you aim to get yourself some exercise in the open water, or to move a little bit faster with less effort. For such purposes, you may want to pedal your way across or under the water with a Seabike, “the portable sea bicycle.”
That’s right. Much to our fascination, we found out that there are not only sea motorcycles but there is also a bicycle for the sea. The Seabike surfaced in the market as far back as 2018, and recently, it has introduced a hand-powered version for users who cannot use their legs.
As the name implies, Seabike is a bicycle for the water, though it is not quite like the Manta5 Hydrofoiler. The premise is that with this device, you will pedal in a horizontal position as you swim, instead of using the tiring kicking motion.
The Searider looks like a Pogo stick, but instead of fixed pedals and a stem, it has a set of bicycle pedals that, when pedaled, power a two-blade propeller. It attaches to the body with a belt and goes in between the legs. All you need to do to move through the water is start pedaling.
From the various videos, it looks like the Seabike is a faster way to swim. You can choose to supplement the pedal propulsion with your usual freestyle strokes, or not. You can also use it with other flotation devices such as a bodyboard or an inflatable board.
Seabike is a 100% manual device, so there is no worrying about charging. It is lightweight and portable, allowing it to be brought along anywhere you go. If you ask me, I think this is good to have as part of a prepper’s survival gear. I mean, you never know if you need to power across a waterbody in a post-apocalyptic world, right?
Seabike is a product of the Italian company Paritet Srl. It can be had from Seabike.fr starting at €290 or about US$309, according to the current going rate.
