However, unlike the PRO, the Sony Xperia PRO-I smartphone is targeted at content creators aka influencers and strangely enough, it is significantly cheaper than the PRO despite having top-end specifications like Qualcomm’s flagship SoC, the Snapdragon 888 5G, and packing 12 GB of RAM and 512 GB of UFS storage. The internal storage can be expanded up to a terabyte via microSDXC.
The real highlight here isn’t the chip; it is the imaging capabilities offered up by a 1.0-type Exmor RS sensor which is paired to a 24 mm ZEISS Tessar Optics and advanced image processing, BIONZ X for mobile, that enables it to record eye-watering 4K 120p videos.
Basically, it has the imaging prowess of a digital camera but with an ultra-slim profile of just 8.9 mm thin. The Sony Xperia PRO-I is the world’s first smartphone to rock a 1.0-type image sensor with Phase Detection AF, btw. Also, the 1.0 type Exmor RS sensor is the same sensor found in the RX100 VII camera but optimized for smartphones.
The rear camera is a tri-camera comprising of three 12 MP sensors while the front is an 8 MP item. Here are some of the imaging highlights straight from the horse’s mouth:
• 315 phase-detection AF points that cover 90% of the frame, allowing users to continue to capture subjects at high speed with high accuracy – even in scenes where focusing is difficult • Advanced AF capabilities to support “Real-time Eye AF” and “Real-time tracking” that keeps track of moving objects with high accuracy, using AI • ZEISS® Tessar Optics with T* anti-reflective coating and dual aperture F2.0/F4.0 for outstanding low light performance, high dynamic range, and beautiful bokeh • World´s first 4K video recording at 120fps High frame rate in a smartphone and includes a built-in strap-hole and a dedicated shutter button for easy, quick control • New Videography Pro feature combining creative flexibility with ease of use • First Xperia to support Eye AF and Object Tracking during video shooting • High-quality video performance and crystal-clear audio recording
Other notables include a 120 Hz 6.5-inch 4K (3,840 x 1,644 pixels) HDR OLED display, Corning Gorilla Glass Victus, IPX5/IPX8 rating for water resistance, IP6X rating for dustproof, Bluetooth 5.2, Wi-Fi 6, USB 3.2 Gen 2, and high-quality audio features, including Dolby Atmos, 3.5mm audio jack, Full-stage Stereo Speakers, and 360 Reality Audio.
