For those unfamiliar with Suzuki’s diverse product range, they are not only known for their super cool motorcycles and ridiculously boxy roomy kei cars but also for their boat outboard motors and mobility solutions for individuals with mobility challenges.
At the recent Japan Mobility Show, Suzuki showcased an intriguing mobility device named MOQBA, short for Modular Quad Based Architecture. This innovative system is built on a modular structure inspired by quadrupeds and is being hailed as the next-generation four-legged mobility solution.
MOQBA offers a unique riding experience, allowing users to sit on it similar to a motorcycle. It rolls smoothly on standard wheels like a typical mobility device, but what sets it apart is its ability to seamlessly navigate steps, thanks to its quadruped design. It’s worth noting that while stair-climbing mobility devices and quadruped designs are not entirely new concepts, MOQBA distinguishes itself by not being a load-bearing device and not catering to wheelchair users. Moreover, it’s not just a research project; given Suzuki’s involvement in electric wheelchairs, it’s likely to become a commercial product.
But the best is yet to come. The MOQBA is not only for urban mobility; the base can be adapted for a multitude of uses. The versatility of this mobility solution is achieved by combining a base chassis with various attachments, enabling three modes: Chair mode, Standing mode, and Stretcher mode. This adaptability not only enhances personal transportation freedom but also serves as a versatile means of transporting both people and objects in challenging areas where traditional vehicles may struggle, particularly in emergencies.
While there’s no confirmation of its actual production, considering Suzuki’s track record, this will probably become a commercial product. It is just a question of when and at what price.
