Traditional sports cars are nice but they are never the most practical of cars in terms of passenger capacity, cargo space, and not to mention the chore of getting in and out of one, which is akin to getting off the floor because of the low CG design. Thankfully, there are cars like the BMW X5 M Competition and BMW X6 M Competition for those who want the thrill and performance of a sports car while not sacrificing passenger capacity or cargo space and is easy to get in and out.
The 2024 BMW X5 M Competition is the German marque’s latest Sports Activity Coupé and the 2024 BMW X6 M Competition is the latest performance Sports Activity Vehicle. As the model names imply, both are Competition models which means they have been treated with extensive modifications in terms of performance, presence (i.e. aesthetics), and digitalization.
Both the BMW X5 M Competition and BMW X6 M Competition are powered by a new 4.4L M TwinPower Turbo V8 engine paired with a 48V electric motor integrated into the compact housing of the 8-speed M Steptronic transmission. This marks the debut of the 48V technology in the marque’s high-performance models.
The electric motor produces a modest 9 kW (12 hp) but turns out a pretty massive torque of 200 Nm (147 lb-ft). All told, the power plant of the new BMW X5 M Competition and BMW X6 M Competition produces a cool 625 horses at 6,000 RPM and develops 750 Nm (553 lb-ft) of torque from 1,800 to 5,800 RPM which enables the duo to make the century sprint in 3.9 seconds.
Other highlights include a cross-bank exhaust manifold, a reinforced crankshaft, further developed turbocharging, a new air intake duct, an optimized oil supply system, and oil separation process, an M Sport exhaust system with electrically controlled flaps, new catalytic converters, an updated exterior design, latest-generation iDrive control/operation system, lots of M upgrades – including M light-alloy wheels, BMW Curved Display, and BMW Operating System 8.
The 2024 BMW X5 M Competition and BMW X6 M Competition are available now with starting prices of US$123,295 and US$128,195, respectively.
