Mercedes Maybach S 580 e Plug-in Hybrid

Electrification has not caught on with Mercedes-Maybach like the main Mercedes-Benz marque. But that changes recently with the Mercedes-Maybach S 580 e Plug-in Hybrid. OK. It is not a fully electric vehicle but the Mercedes-Maybach S 580 e, according to Daniel Lescow, Head of Mercedes-Maybach at Mercedes-Benz Group AG, is a pivotal step towards an electric future.

So yeah, electrification for Maybach is inevitable but that’s the future. For now, your best bet for a cleaner Maybach is the Mercedes-Maybach S 580 e Plug-in Hybrid which also offers electric driving mode. In electric driving mode, the already exceptionally quiet interior becomes even quieter.

Under the hood, the hybrid motor powering the Mercedes-Maybach S 580 e Plug-in Hybrid is based on the 367 hp (270 kW)/500 Nm (369 lb-ft) inline six-cylinder engine from the current Mercedes-Benz petrol engine generation paired with an electric motor. The electric motor produces 150 horses (110 kW) and 440 Nm (325 lb-ft) of instant torque. Mercedes-Maybach said the luxury hybrid has a total system power output of 510 hp (375 kW) and 750 Nm (553 lb-ft).

The 440 Nm of max torque from the electric motor is immediately available from the first engine revolution which affords rapid acceleration. Speaking of acceleration, the Mercedes-Maybach S 580 e makes the 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) sprint in 5.1 seconds. Top speed maxes out at 250 km/h (155 mph) and 140 km/h (87 mph) when in fully electric mode.

It is outfitted with an 11 kW charger as standard with a 60 kW DC charger for fast charging as an option. A full charge can be achieved in approximately 30 minutes with fast charging.

The Mercedes-Maybach S 580 e has a combined fuel consumption, weighted (WLTP) of 1.0-0.8 L/100 km (235-294 mpg), and a combined electrical consumption, weighted (WLTP) of 25.0-22.9 kWh/100km. Electric-only range is up to 100 km (62 miles), thus allowing it to travel emission-free within most cities.

Aesthetically, nothing makes it stand out as a plug-in hybrid but it does bear some electric-specific features that are intentionally discreetly integrated into the vehicle. It includes a concealed charging socket on the left side of the vehicle and blue color accents in the headlights or the battery charging state in the instrument panel.

The Mercedes-Maybach S 580 e Plug-in Hybrid will be available in China initially, followed by Thailand, Europe, and other countries.
