DMC-12 aka the DeLorean is perhaps one of the most iconic cars to emerge in the 80s. It is iconic not just because of its brushed stainless body and its overall good looks; it was because it was a major flop that somehow attained cult status. I suspect it has something to do with certain movies.
Anyhoo, many still dream of owning one and if you are one of them, you’d be glad to know that you can slap a piece of DeLorean on your wrist too – thanks to the REC Watches SPX DeLorean Wristwatch. The watch is made possible through collaboration between the single biggest DeLorean auto service company and REC Watches.
Like REC Watches The 901 RWD Rotana and Ford Mustang timepieces, the REC Watches SPX DeLorean Wristwatch also contains a piece of the actual car. And the one piece contained in each SPX DeLorean is not just from any DeLorean; it was from John Z. DeLorean’s personal DMC-12 company car.
Part of the DeLorean car has been seamlessly repurposed into the outer ring-piece of the watch face which has a dual function in design as a minute-markers. The minute index is also a reference to the Guigaro-designed turbine wheels of the DMC-12. The watch has a brushed 316L stainless steel case, just like the iconic sports car, and has a form that resembles the car silhouette.
The highly recognizable louvers are present too. They can be found spanning across the rubber strap. Finally, the matrix rear lights of the DeLorean serve as an inspiration for the design motif on the case back. No. It will not light up. Instead, the matrix is clear, allowing you to peek at the Swiss-made skeletonized SELLITA caliber SW200-1 S c automatic movement.
Other notables include water resistance to 5 ATM (50M), a sapphire crystal with 3 layers of AR coating, a mineral glass caseback, and a folding clasp, also made from 316L stainless steel.
The REC Watches SPX DeLorean Wristwatch has a limited run of just 456 pieces and it is available to order now for US$1,995, with deliveries expected from March 2023. If you want one, you may want to pre-order it soon because we read that there are 267 pieces left. The books were open only 13 days ago on the 1st.
