Mattel has never been shy about taking Barbie into unexpected territory, but this one hits different. Forget Malibu Barbie or Astronaut Barbie. This is Barbie with baggage—ancestral, supernatural baggage. Folks, meet the Barbie Día De Muertos La Llorona Doll, a spectral beauty inspired by one of Mexico’s most chilling folktales.

For the uninitiated, La Llorona, or “The Weeping Woman,” is a ghost who, in legend, drowned her own children in a moment of grief or fury and now roams riversides crying “¡Ay, mis hijos!” Not exactly the kind of bedtime story you’d expect to translate into a doll, but here we are. And credit where it’s due: Mattel didn’t just throw a veil on Barbie and call it a day.
The doll is draped in layered white lace with a corset bodice, flowing sleeves, and a pale blue underskirt. Her translucent blue hands are painted with skeletal motifs, and her face is adorned in Día de Muertos makeup that leans more haunting than festive. To top it off, she wears a dramatic black rose headdress with a lace veil, turning her into something between runway couture and full-on gothic apparition.
This isn’t just a spooky repaint, either. It’s a Gold Label release designed by Javi Meabe, with the Model Muse body type, articulated arms, and the kind of intricate detailing that makes collectors foam at the mouth. Naturally, it comes with a certificate of authenticity and a doll stand (since ghosts, like dolls, have trouble standing on their own).
The Barbie Día De Muertos La Llorona Doll was priced at US$110, but like any restless spirit worth her salt, she vanished fast—it’s already sold out. I know, I should not have teased you guys like that. But god damn it! This doll is gorgeous. I’d be sinner not to share it. In any case, you may be able to locate it at other toy retailers. Good luck!
