Mattel has done Lunar New Year Barbie for years, so it’s about time they turned their eyes to one of the biggest festivals in India: Diwali. To be fair, down south, it’s Deepavali, which shares similar vibes but comes with slightly different lore. With much of Southeast Asia (hello, Malaysia and Singapore) rooted in South Indian migration, Deepavali is what we grew up with. But hey, semantics aside, it’s finally happening. Folks, say hello to the Diwali Barbie Doll by Anita Dongre.

Dongre, a fashion heavyweight in India, has given Barbie a proper festival wardrobe. The doll is dressed in the “Moonlight Bloom” set, which sounds less like a nightclub event and more like couture, which it is. It’s a choli top and skirt bursting with floral motifs like dahlias, jasmines, and the Indian lotus, the latter symbolizing strength and beauty. In short, it’s Barbie going full Bollywood festive without missing a beat.
This is also the first time Mattel has teamed up with Anita Dongre, which instantly makes this doll more than just another seasonal variant. Think of it as a keepsake that celebrates tradition with a side of runway glam.
The doll features the Lina face sculpt, Gigi body type with arched heels, and comes complete with a certificate of authenticity. And yes, a doll stand is included because while Barbie may embody strength and beauty, balance on tiny arched heels is still a very human struggle.
The Diwali Barbie Doll by Anita Dongre is part of the Barbie Signature Black Label collection and goes for US$40.
