I am sure you are familiar with pizza saver. You know, the little, three-legged plastic that comes with each takeout pizza? There is really nothing spectacular about this little plastic; it is there to do one job. Well, that was until Canada’s Boston Pizza and ad agency John St. gave it a fun twist. Recently patrons in parts of Canada opened boxes of Boston Pizza to find a little summer surprise: there was a set of outdoor furniture set with the pizza.
The table there was the usual pizza saver, but now it was accompanied by three miniature patio chairs which are scaled down reproductions of the actual outdoor furniture set, 3D-printed using food-safe materials. Can you imagine that? Opening the box to find a comical presentation of the pizza saver that might make you suspect if some miniature folks were having a pizza feast, dinning on the pizza you have ordered. Now, that’s whimsical!
If you don’t already know, pizza saver is an exceedingly simple and yet ingenious invention that saves pizzas from around the world from sticking to the cardboard box. The heat and steam from the freshly baked pizza tends to soften the cardboard and this result in the top collapsing onto the pizza, making a mess out of it by the time the pizza arrived at its destination. But slip the unassuming plastic in the center and voila! However, the top collapses, it will not affect the pizza. Clever. Very Clever.
I guess, you could say Carmela Vitale and Claudio Daniel Troglia, the two person who actually thought cardboard box should not ruin a perfectly good pizza, are the unsung heroes of our time – just as much as Domino’s Pizza is by patching potholes to prevent them from ruining takeout pizzas. Anywho, Boston Pizza’s pizza saver with takeout patio chairs was a simple marketing campaign that is sure to have put some smiles on people faces.
