Ever come across an automobile so good that it’d be fitting to describe it as a work of art? Well, I think this one-off Bugatti Chiron Super Sport ‘Golden Era’ is one such car but in both literal and non-literal senses. The car, which made its public debut at the Monterey Car Week, is a one-off creation from Bugatti’s Sur Mesure division at the request of a passionate Bugatti collector.
This unnamed collector has an idea of honoring the marque and the W-16 engine which will end production after the final 2024 Mistral roadster leaves the factory. The Bugatti Chiron Super Sport ‘Golden Era’, which was a result of two years in the making, features landmark moments in Bugatti history expressed in sketches.
You see where this is going, don’t you? The car became a canvas, which in this case is two-tone color comprising a shade of gold called ‘Doré’ and a special metallic variant of ‘Nocturne Black’, marked with the history of Bugatti. All told there are 45 sketches of the brand’s icons, hand-drawn directly onto the car itself.
“On the passenger side, 26 hand-drawn sketches reveal icons like the Type 41 Royale – lauded as the most luxurious car when revealed in 1926 – and the Type 57 SC Atlantic, widely regarded as the most beautiful car ever designed… On the driver’s side, 19 sketches portray the rebirth and enduring success of Bugatti since 1987, tracing from the EB110, through the Veyron and Chiron2. A beautifully simple representation of the 3,712 individual components that come together to create the legendary W16 engine – the most advanced automotive engine ever built – rightfully takes its place as a part of the masterpiece.”
Icons of the marque continue inside the cabin with each of the door panels sporting three Bugatti icons, hand-applied with a bespoke paint and fine paint brush that would allow one of the design team to draw directly on the leather.
One door panel features the legends of the modern day: EB110, Veyron, and Chiron. The other door features icons of the past that inspired them, namely, Type 35, Type 57 SC Atlantic, and Type 41 Royale.
Beyond the awe-inspiring work of art, the Golden Era is a Bugatti Chiron Super Sport powered by an 8.0L W-16 quad-turbocharged engine that produces a mind-bending 1,578 horsepower and rocking the super cool, long-tailed carbon fiber bodywork from the Super Sport 300+.
