CompREST Camping Bed

Anyone who camps know it is bitch to sleep on the natural ground, separated only by just a thin nylon sheet of the tent. In response to this harsh reality, avid campers who seek a little more creature comfort uses air mattress or thick woven rug in a bid to get more comfy, but they are far from perfect. One being not cosy (or cold, to be exact) and takes forever to inflate (and not to mention the annoying bounce it has) and the other, is very susceptible to water and adds extra baggage to your camping gear. One Canadian dude by the name of Sawyer Pahl came up with an awesome ‘in-between’ solution that offers the warm of woven blanket and the thickness of air mattress, less the bounce and it is called CompREST Camping Bed.

CompREST Camping Bed

CompREST, presumably a portmanteau of ‘compress’ and ‘rest’, is a vacuum-packable foam bed that is, well, vacuum packed for ease of carrying and transportation. The brain behind CompREST is a built-from-the-ground up CompREST vacuum pump that works with the one-way valve-equipped vac bag to shrink down the CompREST mattress to a manageable size of 24 x 9 x 4.5 inches. It even comes with its own stuff bag for easy lugging around. The vac pump is powered by lithium-ion battery pack can provide about 20 compressions on each full charge and the juice can be shared with your USB-powered devices such as your smartphone via a built-in USB port. So, it kind of make it the first camping bed that charges your phone.

CompREST Camping Bed

The bed is of foam, a common mattress material, wrapped in a removable and washable outer composed of a Lycra top surface and waterproofed, nylon with ripstop bottom. Thoughtful velcro on the sides of the mattress allows multiple 74 x 25 x 2 inches CompREST beds to be joined together to form a larger bed, if so desired. Granted, CompREST may not be revolutionary, revolutionary, but the prospect of bringing a bed over your shoulder, along with a 2.6 lbs vac pump, sure beats bringing an actual bed. Ok, nobody actually brings a bed to camp, but you get the idea. In another word, CompREST makes bringing a bed to camping possible.

If you share CompREST’s creator’s enthusiasm, you can help support his endeavor by pre-ordering the product on Kickstarter. Though it is not going to be cheap. It will run you back at $139-$164, depending when you make the pledge and also, it will be a 7 months plus wait for it to be delivered – that’s if the campaign meets its funding goal. That said, it might be an uphill task as the campaign has only 3 days left on the calendar.
