I sure did not see this coming. Then again, it is kind of expected. I am talking about the “Q” version of the Evangelion Unit 02 “G” Awakening Mode figure which just had a re-release with a slight update late last year. The Unit 02 Beast “G” Mode now joins the Deforeal Evangelion Unit 01 “G” Awakening Mode figure.
The DefoReal Evangelion Production Model-02 Beast “G” Mode is, well, the “Q” version of the original with a different and more menacing pose. It looks like a baby (only uglier) throwing a tantrum (with roars in this case). For the uninitiated, the “G” series is based on the original concept of “What if G-cells were injected into an Evangelion?” “G” here is, of course, Godzilla. Here’s the official description of G-Cells:
“Highly invasive cells that cause an organism’s tissues to transform when the cells are incorporated with the organism. This incorporation of G Cells has caused many kaiju born in the Godzilla series to exhibit particular characteristics unique to the G-Cells.”
This new Deforeal take is not a cute version of the Unit 02 Beast “G” Mode; it is a completely new sculpt. Standing at an adorable 18 cm (7 inches) tall, the figure features the Godzilla’s rocky skin, large dorsal fins, and a long tail extending from the body, with part of the Evangelion Unit 02 constraining armor.
The DefoReal Evangelion Production Model-02 Beast “G” Mode may be part of the DefoReal line but it is not the traditional cute. Only the size and proportion are classified as cute. Appearance? Nope. That definitely qualifies as a nightmare quality.
Like Unit 01, this figure also has a limited edition version that has light-up eyes. Unfortunately, though, I don’t believe it has any glow-in-the-dark feature. The books for the DefoReal Evangelion Production Model-02 Beast “G” Mode have only been opened (October 10, to be precise), but the 14,000 yen collectible figure is already sold out. You may still be able to find some toy retailers taking pre-orders.
