Regular light switches, no matter how sophisticated or modern, are borderline monotonous. If you feel the same way, Japanese “seriously fun and playful DIYer” Oda-san might have just the thing to change that. Enter the DIY Bread with Jam and Butter Light Switch.
As the name suggests, this is a custom, DIY light switch faceplate that transforms an ordinary switch into one that looks like a slice of bread spread with “jam” and topped with a thick square of “butter.” In this setup, the “butter” serves as the interface that activates the actual switch on the backplate. That’s right. This thing merely replaces the faceplate of the original switch assembly. That said, it is obviously designed for the switch type common to where Oda-san resides.
The DIY Bread with Jam and Butter Light Switch is the latest variation of Oda-san’s original Bread with Butter Switch, which also inspired a red bean butter toast version. That one features a toasted slice with a “red bean” spread, topped with a square “butter” switch.
Unfortunately, these whimsical bread switches aren’t for sale—yet. In fact, most of Oda-san’s delightful creations remain unavailable for purchase. However, there is one product you can buy on Oda-san’s website: Bread for Memorization.
Yes, Oda-san clearly has a thing for bread (same here, by the way). This so-called “bread for memorization” is essentially a mobile highlighter. It’s designed to look like a slice of bread but with a hollowed-out center replaced by a red, transparent piece that mimics jam (strawberry, I assume?). You use it like a highlighter by placing it over text you want to read or memorize.
It’s available for 3,300 yen (~22 USD) on Oda-san’s webshop and even comes with a magnet shaped like a thick square of butter—perfect for sticking it onto a ferrous surface when not in use. Quirky!
