LEGO Mario Kart Spiny Shell (40787)

We spotted the listing for the LEGO Mario Kart Spiny Shell sometime around when the LEGO Mario Kart set was announced. But it was only recently that we realized it’s something money can’t buy. Well, at least not directly. The LEGO Mario Kart Spiny Shell (40787) is a promotional set—a clever little call-to-action from LEGO marketing to entice you into becoming a member of LEGO Insiders.

So no, it’s not an official retail set, nor is it a Gift With Purchase, as some previously speculated. Set 40787 is destined to be lusted after by true Super Mario fans, and LEGO is clearly hoping this bait will reel in those who haven’t yet joined the LEGO Insiders program.

So, how do you get one? Simple. First, you have to be an Insider—if you aren’t already. Then, if you don’t have any Insider Reward Points, you’ll need to spend like a Scrooge McDuckian to rack up a cool 2,500 points to exchange for one. If you already have those points, you’re golden—just redeem them.

As for the set itself, the 234-piece build is aimed at adult LEGO fans. It lets you recreate one of the most infamous items in Mario Kart history. If you have it, it’s cool as hell. If you don’t, you’re just hoping nobody behind you does. The ‘Blue Shell’, as fans lovingly call it, measures over 4 in. (10 cm) high, 4 in. (10 cm) wide, and 4 in. (10 cm) deep when completed. LEGO lists it with a value of US$19.99.

Unfortunately, the offer may have already ended. I could be wrong—but if that’s the case, you’ll have to turn to the open market to snag one.
