Mi fans in China realized something important recently. Xiaomi’s CEO/founder Lei Jun actually checked out the comments on his social media. A while back, someone commented on Lei Jun’s social media account about how it would be nice if a washing machine had a separate washer for underwear. Lei Jun picked this up and fast-forward yesterday, at Xiaomi’s keynote event, the Mijia Dual Zone Washing Machine [CH] was revealed.
Granted a dual washer in one machine isn’t new. LG has peddled the twin wash system designed for two types of laundry load since 2015 but the Mijia Dual Zone Washing Machine is different. It does not sacrifice the main washer for another washer nor did it bump up the size of the machine. How? Well, this other washer is a very tiny one, tucked into the top left corner of the machine. It is almost surreal-kind of tiny. Given the size, it may as be Remy’s washer.
In case you don’t know. Some Chinese consumers are overly obsessed with washer hygiene. This category of consumers believes in washing regular apparel separately from underwear. Why? I have no idea. I do not know what’s the fuss. I mean it ain’t yucky—unless soiled by say for example poop—since the laundry would be completely clean once the washer is done. But yeah, there’s such an obsession and it isn’t limited to washing. Even for bathing, some folks have separate towels for the body, head, and face for wiping down after a shower. Believe it.
Anyhoo, this dual-zone washing machine is dedicated to this group of clean freaks. Xiaomi’s latest Mijia Washing Machine has two drums—yes, you heard that right. They’ve crammed not one but two washing and drying compartments into a standard-sized machine. So, if you’ve ever wished to wash your delicates and that suspiciously stained gym gear at the same time, this dual-drum washer has you covered. It’s all packed into one space-saving marvel that defies the laws of household appliance physics.
The real trick here? Each drum operates independently with its own motor, water intake, and dryer system. While one drum handles the tough stuff, the other, smaller drum specializes in your more, shall we say, delicate needs, complete with a gentle wash cycle certified for medical-grade cleanliness. Plus, it can wash and dry at low temperatures for those fabrics that turn into doll clothes when accidentally hit with hot water.
For 4,999 yuan [CH] (or around 702 USD based on the current going rate), you can own a washing machine that’s essentially the multitasking wizard of laundry day. And yes. This machine is totally real and it is available to order in China from Xiaomi online store. No words if this novel washer will ever make it out of China.
