The concept of floating hotel is not entirely new, but this one coming from engineer/architect Gianluca Santosuosso called MORPHotel is radically different – both in the use and aesthetic. Not only it is self-sustaining, harvesting energy from the waves and the sun to fuel the power required onboard, its alien-ish form can actually morph with the movement of the waves. Its half-mile long spine curves with the water currents and by curling the ‘arms’, it could morph itself into a floating dock in the middle of the open water.
To add to the fun, some luxury rooms are designed to undock, thus enabling hotel guests to roam the nearby waters. Gianluca’s idea is to have MORPHotel travels around the world via Earth’s largest real estate, albeit very slowly, and it could dock itself to any harbor with its outstretch dock doubling as a pathway linking the land and the hotel. While at sea, the end of the dock serves as a helipad. Guests can choose to stay on MORPHotel indefinitely as the structure sail the world with no particular itinerary or set destination. That said, we have no doubt that this is richie rich-only kind of enjoyment cos’ it is definitely going cost a boatload of cash to embark on such carefree journey.
The idea is brilliant, but that’s assuming Mother Nature is always that kind to provide MORPHotel the calm water required for a smooth sailing journey. Why we say that? Well, perhaps we have heard one too many sea horror stories. The sailing hotel will of course equipped with all necessary amenities like theater, garden, restaurants and such, to keep its inhabitant occupied and sane.
A bold concept and while we look forward to its fruition, we highly doubt anyone would take on this gargantuan project. Hardware would be a pretty insane hurdle, not to mention the administrative details that would enable it to visit the various countries. Also, we sure hope there’s at least a squad of armed security personnel, cos’ pirates are going to be a threat.
