NYPD Knightscope K5 Security Robot Manhattan Subway

When we chat about robot cops, our minds typically conjure up images of towering, intimidating machines, like the ED-209 from Robocop, ready to make even the toughest criminals rethink their life choices. But, really, who in their wildest sci-fi dreams would envision a robot cop resembling a Dalek? That’s exactly what the Knightscope K5 security robot looks like.

Now, this little fella has come a long way and recently scored a gig as an official member of the NYPD. Yep, the New York Police Department decided to add a high-tech recruit to their ranks. It’s like having a metal buddy patrolling the city’s subway system, with a particular focus on the theater district. The robot’s day starts at 12 AM, when most New Yorkers are counting sheep, and ends at 6 AM.

The big announcement was made just last week, in a press conference that took place in a Manhattan subway station. But honestly, I can’t help but wonder how this shiny automaton will fare in the wild streets of New York. After all, this is the city that never sleeps, and even robots might need a strong cup of coffee to keep up. I hope it won’t feel too and decided to end its misery.

But, believe it or not, this isn’t the first rodeo for robot cops in the United States. Other police departments have been using Knightscope’s tech wizardry for years. One of them is out in sunny Los Angeles County, California. You can check out more about their robot adventures HERE.
