Don’t be misled by Apple’s claims that you can make award-winning movies with just a smartphone. If you’re serious about filmmaking, you should even look past DSLRs entirely and consider actual cinema cameras. They may not be cheap, but if you’re patient, you could get your hands on the OCTOPUS16 from OCTOPUS CINEMA for under US$1,000.
This camera not only makes cinema-quality filming affordable but also keeps your kit lightweight, weighing in at just 400g (0.9 lbs or 14.1 oz.). Though its dimensions of 80 x 80 x 50 mm (3.15 x 3.15 x 1.97 inches) don’t make it pocket-friendly without creating an awkward bulge, it’s remarkably small for a cinema camera. Don’t let its size fool you; the OCTOPUS16 doesn’t skimp on performance, offering 4K internal RAW recording and a wide exposure latitude for true 16-bit sensor readout.
The camera, which resembles an oversized action cam, is still in development. It currently operates with a power bank via USB-C but will later include a Sony NP-F battery plate, as reported by News Shooter. It’s designed to record to a CFexpress Type B card and, upon finalization, will feature HDMI output alongside Thunderbolt or USB-C for downloading footage directly to a PC.
Details are still emerging, and the official website, is in my opinion, a little too minimalistic to offer any real information. For those interested, Matthew Allard ACS provides a comprehensive report on newshooter.com. The OCTOPUS16 aims to break into the market at under $1,000 once it becomes available. Oh, wait. Have we said that already? Well, I guess I am excited. And I am not even a filmmaker.
