If you like the look of the Rivian R1t but rather not have a pickup truck and something more compact, well, we have good news. The electric vehicle maker has just introduced two new fully electric SUV models, R2 and R3, built on its newly revealed midsize platform. The Rivian R2 is an all-new midsize SUV and the R3 is a midsize crossover, along with its performance variant R3X.
Both models offer a mix of performance, capability, and utility, featuring unique design elements like a powered rear glass that fully drops into the liftgate for a unique open-air driving experience, and interiors made with premium, sustainable materials. They will come with two battery sizes, offering over 300 miles (483 km) of range and 0-60 mph (0-97 km/h) acceleration in under 3 seconds for the fastest configuration.
Aesthetically, the new R2 and R3 look quite Bronco-ish, if you know what I mean, but with an unmistakable Rivian touch. OK. Maybe just the R3 appears Bronco-ish. The R2 oozes the Range Rover vibe, however. At least that is how I saw them when I first saw the new electric SUVs.
Pricing for R2 starts around US$45,000, with R3 priced lower, aiming for broader accessibility. However, the pricing for R3 has not been disclosed. Reservations for R2 are open in the U.S. for a US$100 deposit, with deliveries expected to begin in the first half of 2026, followed by R3 and R3X.
The vehicles are built on a new midsize platform designed for performance, range, and cost efficiency, featuring three motor variants, a structural battery for improved energy density, fast charging, enhanced autonomous capabilities, and frequent software updates for expanding features.
The design focuses on adventure, space, and refined touches, aiming to make Rivian’s best features available at a lower price point. Production of R2 will begin in Normal, Illinois, leveraging existing facilities to reduce capital required for launch and increase manufacturing capacity to 215,000 units per year, contributing to improved capital efficiency and cash visibility.
