Remember how Levi’s turned its trucker jacket into a gesture-enabled apparel using Google Advanced Technology and Projects’ Jacquard? Well, since 2017, there have been a couple of other Jacquard-enabled fashion pieces, including Saint Laurent Cit-E backpack, and adidas and EA GMR shoe insert that lets wearers combine real-life play with EA Sports FIFA mobile game.
This week, Google revealed yet another Jacquard-enabled product: the Samsonite Konnect-i Backpack. Available in Slim and Standard, the Samsonite Konnect-i Backpack puts smartphone controls on the left shoulder strap, so you can access your most used features without whipping out the phone.
The strap has built-in LEG light that will light up according to the alerts that you have set. Using the Jacquard app, you can customized what gestures control which actions. For example, you can program Jacquard to deliver call and text notifications, take a selfie, control music, or reach out to Google Assistant.
Part of the magic here is the Jacquard Tag, a small micro USB Bluetooth device that slots into the backpack’s left strap. The Tag is powered by a rechargeable battery good for 10-14 days on single charge.
As a bag, the Samsonite Konnect-i Backpack has a water repellent exterior with reflective trimming, a padded laptop compartment for up to 15.6-inch laptops, a dedicated tablet pocket, multiple pockets for organize your belongings, and padded shoulder straps and padded back panel.
