If you are into repurposed objects, the Umbrellamp may be just right up your alley. Umbrellamp is exactly what it sounds like: an umbrella-based lamp. Though it is not just any brolly; it is based off traditional Chinese umbrella that has been around centuries. For the uninitiated, traditional Chinese umbrella consists of a complex opening mechanism and structure made entirely out natural bamboo and strings, and the cover is of oiled paper (or waxed paper in some variations). But unlike some novelty lamp that literally sports the form of an umbrella, Umbrellamp is of a contemporary design that uses the materials and ancient built process of traditional Chinese umbrellas.
The result is truly unique, Zen-ish lamp that is decidedly un-umbrella, but still bears the hallmarks and soul of an old oil-paper umbrella. It has natural bamboo and yarn strings for the structure and oil paper for the shade. Pretty cool, eh? Among the ancient affair are brass decoration, together with the contemporary structure, offers a sense of modern aesthetic. Created by Hamburg-based designs studio, Xian-Studio, the Umbrellamp is created with the aim of making this quickly obsolete craftsmanship relevant again in this modern world.
There are many lamps out there, but if you ask me, I’d say Umbrellamp is one that has a wholesome motive behind it and it is also one that has a story that is rich in history to tell. At this point, Umbrellamp is yet to become a reality and this is where Kickstarter comes in. Xian-Studio is asking for 25,000 euros (roughly US$31,000) to take Umbrellamp to production. I will be honest here. We thought it is a somewhat lofty goal for a lamp, especially given that the startup has not previous history on Kickstarter. I think it will be an uphill task.
However, if you are willing, you can support these aspiring designers’ endeavor by pre-ordering Umbrellamp on Kickstarter. Be warn though, it is not going to be cheap. You are looking at €78-159 (around US$96-197) a unit, depending on how soon you act on it, the size and design. At the time of this writing, the product has managed to secure a little under 7,400 euros from 31 backers, but hey, it has 40 more days to go, so it may just make it if words get out. And if it does make it, you can expect this character lamp to reach you sometime in October 2018.
