Collaboration with pop culture brands is the one other thing that Xiaomi cannot resist doing. The latest to join the China maker-of-everything-you-need-in-life growing portfolio of collaboration is this: Xiaomi Mi 9 SE Brown Bear Edition. For this device, Xiaomi partnered with LINE, a chat app from Japan which is widely used in Japan and in some parts of Asia. As with most collaboration of such nature, everything about the device is limited to cosmetic. Oddly, though, Xiaomi did not drop the device in the color of the bear which is brown like DJI did with DJI Spark.
The special edition features a Brown logo on the back of the phone and a custom LINE FRIENDS theme. In addition, each Brown Bear Edition device comes with a special packaging containing a number of Brown Bear-themed accessories, including a 10,000 mAh power bank with Brown Bear graphic, a certificate and stickers. Even the box has Brown Bear’s mark too. As mentioned, despite it being based on the popular LINE FRIENDS character, the phone and the accessories are not in brown which is kind of disappointing because that’s what makes Brown so recognizable.
Beyond the fancy Brown Bear theme touches and accessories, the device remains the same Mi 9 SE that was launched last month. It is important not to confuse with the Mi 9 announced a month prior. SE is the more affordable and should we say, watered down, version of the Mi 9 that is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 712 SoC and features a 5.97-inch Super AMOLED display, a teardrop notch with a 20 MP selfie camera, in-display fingerprint sensor, a 3,070 mAh battery with support for 18W fast charging, and a three-camera setup around the back made up of a 48 MP main shooter, a 13 MP wide-angle lens camera, and a 8 MP telephoto lens camera.
Xiaomi Mi 9 SE Brown Bear Edition is offered with 6 GB RAM and 128 GB storage. Those in China can pre-order the device starting today for 2,499 yuan (about US$372). The device is expected to ship starting April 9, 2019. Check out the promo video below.
