Another day, another new products from China’s biggest provision gadget provider, Xiaomi. This time, it is a pair of sneakers called Mijia Sport Shoes 2 – the second pair the company is touting since the introduction of Xiaomi ‘Intel Inside’ Ultra Smart Running Shoes last year. The Mijia Sport Shoes 2 is clearly a lot better looking than its predecessor. A quick scroll through the product page, it looks to be more polished in both the construction and material departments.
A lot of features where dished out. Among them, is this construction method called “Uni-Moulding” which, while sounding a lot like the concept along the line of unibody, is not one-mold-shoe. Instead, Uni-Moulding fuses five different layers and types of material, each separated by a thin polyurethane film, into one piece using a single mold to create a seamless appearance. In other words, Uni-Moulding won’t make the shoe looked like it has been glued together layer-by-layer and therefore, theoretically, the days of shoes splitting up should be a thing of the past.
Also, since the layers are so tightly compressed, the entire behaves like a single piece and hence, it should promote stability. Moreover, Mijia Sport Shoes 2 touts a midsole that incorporated Dow’s proprietary INFUSE material into traditional EVA and it has a knitted seamless upper much like Nike’s Flynit. Xiaomi said the former increases the midsole’s rebound property and overall performance while not susceptible to deformation. As for the latter, Xiaomi said the entire upper has only a single seam, uses less material and the knitted process allows for unique patterns and designs.
Additionally, it also boasts an ventilated traction-friendly foam outsole that promotes moisture-wicking and breathability. Interestingly, this is one pair of sneakers that have ease of maintenance in mind. I mean, seriously, how many sport shoes makers ever touched on maintenance, let alone saying their kicks are easy to maintain? Certainly, none that I know. But the Xiaomi Mijia Sport Shoes 2 do; it wants to stop scrubbing your sneakers and dump it straight into a washer to get it clean. Yup. Xiaomi wants you to machine wash its latest sport shoes because, it totally can.
Like all of Xiaomi’s products, the Xiaomi Mijia Sport Shoes 2 product page is long and detailed, but it somehow did not mention anything about the smart chip that made the last pair so desirable. Perhaps, it does not have at all? I am going out on a limb to say this isn’t a smart kicks since because the product name does not hint that it is.
Available for both men and women, Xiaomi Mijia Sport Shoes 2 will go on sale starting June 11, at 10AM China time, priced at a super affordable 199 yuan (or about US$31). At this price, it kind of makes an attractive alternative to pricer items from brands like Nike and Adidas. Though we can’t say anything on the performance aspect until we have test drove it.
