Xiaomi has stopped producing Mix models since 2018 (not counting the Mix Alpha which was concept). Yesterday, the name Mix appeared again, but this time, as a folding phone called Mix Fold.
That’s right folks. Xiaomi Mix Fold is the brand’s very first folding phone. It is the first phone developed by Xiaomi Smart Factory and the first device to rock Xiaomi self-developed Pengpai C1 imaging chip. And it is also the first phone to tout liquid lens.
Liquid lens is a revolutionary tech that uses electrical signal to change the lens distance to the sensor to achieve telephoto and macro functions. Xiaomi said that its liquid lens allows you to zoom up to 30x and take macro as close as 3 cm.
So, I guess I should say ‘move over periscope lens’? I mean, it could be because, with liquid lens, you have the boon of taking macro, albeit not as close.
The liquid lens is joined by a 108 MP sensor main camera and a 13 MP ultra wide-angle lens camera.
Anywho, back to the device… if you read our report on a patent filed by Xiaomi, the setup should not surprise. It is very much like Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2; it has a full screen display on the outside for use as a regular when folded.
Unfortunately, also like Samsung’s, the center hinge cannot close flushed like Huawei Mate X2.
The 90 Hz 6.52-inch device opens up to reveal a 60 Hz 8.01-inch 2K+ AMOLED display with support for Dolby Vision and HDR10+.
From the hands on video that I have saw, the folding line remains apparent, although some field reporters claimed that it is not obvious. But if I can see it from a video, it is obvious. Period.
Other key spec-sheet details include Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 Mobile Platform, LPDDR5 memory and UFS 3.1 storage, Wi-Fi 6 enhanced version, Harman/Kardon stereo 4-speaker, IR blaster, two-battery setup with a total of 5,020 mAh capacity and 67 W fast charge, along with support for both QC4+ and PD3.0 fast charging standards.
The all-new Xiaomi Mix Fold Folding Smartphone is offered in 12 or 16 GB memory and 256 or 512 GB storage. The device is not open for pre-order in China with a starting price of 9,999 yuan (or about US$1,522).
