While Barbie‘s tributes to David Bowie, Elvis Presley, and the likes are cool, I think the Barbie Inspiring Women series is even cooler. The latest to join the likes of Dr. Jane Goodall, and Madam C.J. Walker, in the Barbie Signature, Barbie Inspiring Women series is Bessie Coleman (1892-1926), the first African-American woman and the first Native American to hold a pilot license.

Barbie Inspiring Women Bessie Coleman Doll

For those who don’t know, the Barbie Inspiring Women series of dolls is dedicated to representing courageous women of their time and Bessie Coleman certainly fits the bill. Despite facing racial and gender discrimination during her time, Bessie’s achievement could not be overstated.

The Barbie Inspiring Women Bessie Coleman Doll is not just another Barbie doll that Mattel said represents the aviator; it has a face sculpt sculpted to her likeness by Desiree/Adria. The doll is complete with a traditional olive-green aviator getup, including a “BC”-initiated cap. As with most, if not all Barbie dolls, this collectible doll cannot stand alone on its own. It will need the included doll stand to do so. The doll comes in display-worthy packaging and a Certificate of Authenticity.
