BMW has rolled out the red carpet for the world’s most safety-conscious VIPs with their latest creations: the BMW i7 Protection and the BMW 7 Series Protection. These swanky models not only provide top-notch protection but also come with all the bells and whistles you’d expect from the BMW brand.
The BMW i7 Protection even boasts the title of the world’s first electric protection sedan, proving that safety can be shockingly silent. Pun absolutely intended. With powerful electric motors under the hood, it’s basically a bulletproof Tesla with a BMW badge.
Speaking of electric motors, it shares the powertrain as the most powerful all-electric production model, the BMW i7 M70 Xdrive. The two electric motors together create an electric all-wheel-drive system with a combined output of up to 400 kW/544 hp and a maximum combined torque of 745 Newton meters (549 lb-ft).
Despite the heft that comes with all the protection imaginable, the BMW i7 Protection happily makes the century sprint (0-100 km/h, or 62 mph) in 9 seconds flat while top speed is electronically limited to 160 km/h (99 mph).
Meanwhile, the internal combustion model benefits from the latest generation 4.4L V8 with TwinPower Turbo technology, paired with a 48V mild hybrid technology. The new drive system generates a maximum output of 390 kW/530 hp and peak torque of 750 Nm (553 lb-ft).
This power is put to good use on all four wheels as required, directed by the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system. All told, the V8 mild hybrid unit enables the BMW 7 Protection to rocket from 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in just 6.6 seconds and send it on its way to a top speed of 210 km/h (130 mph).
While getting away fast is key, protection is paramount too. That said, both models have a security concept that’s fancier than a Swiss bank vault. They’ve got armor steel body structures, armored glass, and more armor than a medieval knight. These cars are so secure that even James Bond would be jealous.
