If you like pocket knives that have a unique way of opening like the Collapsing Blade Mk12, then you will dig the new Gravitic Flip Manual OTF by CRKT. Technically, this way of revealing the blade is not new. It kind of revives a little-known knife design, but with a modern twist.
Designed by Ted Valerio, founder of Teval Knives, the Gravitic Flip takes inspiration from the original “Flip It” knives. OTF means out-the-front, but there’s no spring-loaded blade waiting for you to press a button. Your finger gets to do some work here.
A flick of the insert sends the dual-edge spearpoint blade forward. Tabs on that insert recess into the handle to lock it in place, while recessed magnets keep everything secure when closed. No springs, no buttons. Just a rather satisfying piece of mechanical choreography.
The stonewashed 5Cr13MoV stainless steel blade measures 3.18 inches (80.80 mm) long and 0.11 inches (2.74 mm) thick. Overall length is 7.50 inches (190.50 mm), shrinking to a closed length of 4.28 inches (108.69 mm).
A glass-reinforced nylon handle helps keep the weight down to just 1.40 ounces (39.69 grams). You also get ambidextrous opening, a deep-carry pocket clip, and a lanyard hole. It’s a pocket knife with an opening act, but it still remembers the pocket part.
The CRKT Gravitic Flip Manual OTF costs US$38. Unfortunately, it is currently sold out on CRKT’s website. You can sign up for a restock notification, giving your inbox something more interesting to deliver than another discount on socks.
