For the longest time, gaming chairs resembled racing seats taken directly from race cars. However, brands like ASUS ROG, Herman Miller, Logitech G, IKEA, and Haworth have demonstrated that ergonomic design doesn’t need to mimic this style. Speaking of Haworth, this relatively unknown but longstanding (over seven decades!) and privately-held, family-owned American office furniture maker has a gaming chair that will make any Halo fans go head over heels.
Introducing the Haworth Fern x Halo: The Master Chief Edition Gaming Chair. Based on the Holland, Michigan-based firm’s Fern Executive gaming chair, the Haworth x Halo Fern Gaming Chair adopts a militaristic aesthetic inspired by the highly popular video game series, Halo.
Decked out in Master Chief’s iconic olive green armor color, including the adjustment levers, this chair features subtle yet strong hints of its allegiance to Chief Petty Officer John-117 and the Halo series. These include a Halo Reach Patch and a patch that specifically denotes this as the “Haworth Fern x Halo The Master Chief Edition Gaming Chair” complete with the model number, an embroidery of the number 117 on the headrest as a tribute to the legendary Spartan-II super-soldier, and a USNC emblem on the lower back spine of the chair. This chair is the only chair that is designed with an 18K gold-plated plaque from the United Nations Space Command.
As a gaming chair, it retains all the features and benefits of the standard Fern model, named for its design inspired by the natural flexibility of a fern leaf. It is designed to distribute weight evenly as you move, helping to relieve pressure. Developed with assistance from the Human Performance Institute at Western Michigan University, the chair features a patented Wave Suspension system that mimics the human spine and cradles the user’s body in comfort.
Key features include being independently tested to be free from over 10,000 chemicals, adjustable seat height, 4D arms, adjustable seat depth, backstop, forward tilt, soft casters, tilt tension, and optional height-adjustable lumbar support. Essentially, it has features befitting a legendary super-soldier.
However, luxury comes at a cost: the chair is priced at as cool as Master Chief’s US$1,499. Though, it is worth mentioning that it is not more expensive than the regular Fern Executive model it is based on.
