After announcing a surprise collaboration with Nintendo on the video game company’s lovable Super Mario, LEGO has, on April 7, revealed that it is open for pre-order. We hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the LEGO 5006216 Super Mario Starter Kit Bundle with Gift is apparently sold out at this point.
Well, that was fast. And yes, it is LEGO has a new numbering convention for this unique collaboration.
For the uninitiated, here’s what the LEGO 5006216 Super Mario is about:
“Disclosed for the first time today by LEGO Design Lead Jonathan Bennink, fans will be able to begin exploring the fun-packed LEGO Super Mario universe with the Adventures with Mario Starter Course. This entry point set to the world of LEGO Super Mario is needed to unlock expansion sets and features seven action bricks for different interactions with the LEGO Mario figure that are only included in this set.”
And here’s a video introduction by LEGO design lead Jonathan Bennink:
The included LEGO Mario figure features LCD screens in his eyes, mouth and belly that will display a wide range of instant reactions based on the movement, color and action bricks. There is a speaker built in too, to play iconic sounds and music from the video game series.
Also packed inside the world’s famous plumber are accelerometer, gyroscope and sensor to pick up the aforementioned color and action bricks. So, yeah, it is basically a game of Super Mario in physical form.
In addition, two expansion sets were revealed: the Piranha Plant Power Slide Expansion and Bowser’s Castle Boss Battle Expansion Set. The former will retail for $29.99 while the latter, $99.99. But that’s just a start.
The full LEGO Super Mario assortment will be released on August 1st. Hit pass the jump for a closer look at the game. Before that, here’s a look at the packaging:
