Piggy bank is, well, just a piggy bank. It is not a playable thing… unless the piggy bank is the Takara Tomy Playable Piggy Bank Space Invaders Table. This super fun coin bank is modeled after the iconic table-style arcade console for Space Invaders introduced by Taito in 1978.
The Takara Tomy Playable Piggy Bank Space Invaders Table is roughly 1/6 scale of the original and it looked more like a Space Invaders collectible than a piggy bank. In other words, it is dope. It is being released to commemorate the 45th anniversary of Space Invaders.
The biggest feature of this product is the fact that you can drop 100 yen coins in it to play a game of Space Invaders and in the process save the coins. Just like the arcade game, inserting a 100 yen coin into the coin slot lets you play Space Invaders on the color LCD screen. It has an integrated controller, which is decorated with stickers, on the front side of the miniature table.
The piggy bank function can store up to eighty (80) 100 yen coins which you can retrieve from the coin box at the bottom of the miniature arcade table when it is full.
The Takara Tomy Playable Piggy Bank Space Invaders Table is not new though; this is actually an improved version of the Space Invaders Game Cabinet Bank from 2009.
The device measures 153 mm wide, 103 mm deep, and 96 mm tall, and requires three AA cells to operate (not included).
The Takara Tomy Playable Piggy Bank Space Invaders Table is set to be released in January 2024. Meanwhile, it is available for pre-order from Takara Tomy A.R.T.S webstore as well as on Rakuten for 12,500 yen (tax included, about US$90). Takara Tomy A.R.T.S. is throwing a Space Invaders rubber coaster as a pre-order bonus while Rakuten is offering up a collectible sticker sheet. While stocks last.
