Good news! Fans of Samsung and Android, the wait is finally over. After much rumors and official teaser, the new Samsung flagships, Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge, have been officially unwrapped at the Mobile World Congress 2016 at Barcelona. The duo boasts advanced camera features, water resistance, and the much missed external memory. Aesthetically, both S7 and S7 Edge both touts 3D glass and metal, a design language inherited from its predecessors announced at the same event last year. While they may look similar to the former flagships, these new devices are now IP68 rated for water and dust resistant, giving them an edge in real world usage.
Samsung has always pride themselves as the forerunner of mobile imaging and so, it is not surprising to find improvement in imaging department as well. With the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge, Samsung introduces the fist Dual Pixel camera on a smartphone that promised to deliver brighter and sharper images, even in low light condition, of course. The Dual Pixel technology affords the device with brighter lens with wider aperture, and bigger pixel and on top of that, the camera has faster shutter speed and a more accurate autofocus even in low light environments. A new camera mode is also introduced, called Motion Panorama, that brings motion to traditional panoramic stills.
And then there’s the hybrid SIM card tray that allows you to insert a microSD card of up to 200GB (!) to bump up your storage, which I think power users are going to need as the devices maximum storage tops out at 64GB. The hybrid SIM tray can also double as a dual SIM card tray, handy for globetrotters, though this feature will be only available to select countries. Other notables include powerful processor, bigger battery capacity, internal cooling system to keep the device from overheating and a native screen recording capability that lets gamer record their gaming experience or share their screen to play with others. That’s kind of a good news for mobile gamers who previously have been relying on third-party apps to do so.
Speaking of gaming, there’s another welcome “add-on” feature called Game Launcher which manage to critical aspects of gaming: battery and notifications. If you are not into mobile gamings, you’d be like ‘oh, ok’, but if you are a ‘serious’, Gaming Launcher maybe a welcome features – especially the notifications, which can annoy a gamer much. Of course, with the new flagships, come the support of Samsung Pay, fingerprint sensor and wireless charging.
