I’m not a huge fan of sequels, be it movies or TV shows, but Todd Phillips’ Joker (2019, Warner Bros. Pictures) had me clamoring for more. If you share the same sentiment, you’ll be glad to know that the wait is almost over. Five years on, the Joker sequel is finally arriving in theaters. Before that, Warner Bros. Pictures shared the first look via the official teaser trailer.
Normally, I’m not a fan of stylized comics-based movies, but Joker hits differently and looks like it’s going to hit even more differently this time around. From the teaser trailer, it feels like it’s leaning towards a musical. To this, the director (also Todd Phillips) did not confirm or deny.
He only commented that “music is an essential element.” However, he also reassures that the involvement of music does not “veer too far from the first film.”
Anyhoo, Joaquin Phoenix, reprising his role as Arthur Fleck (which is not consistent with DC Comics’ reveal of Joker’s new real name, by the way), is now joined by Lady Gaga, aka Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, as Harleen Quinzel, who later becomes Joker’s notorious partner in crime, Harley Quinn.
However, Todd’s version of this loony villain may not be consistent with the comics. In the comics, Harley was a psychiatrist who somehow became seriously obsessed with the Joker and eventually went all loony with him. In Phillips’ version, Gaga’s Quin appears to be a fellow asylum inmate. Anyway, we’ll let you experience the teaser trailer for yourself in the video embedded below.
Joker: Folie à Deux is set to hit the theaters on October 4, 2024.
